| Vaison la Romaine in the French National Newspaper Le Dauphiné July 20th 2004 The Academy of Music's " Musical Hour " (Translation) For the ninth year running, The Academy of Music "Barbara Krakauer" has presented a series of concerts at the end of end of their summer program in Vaison la Romaine, Provence. Since 1995, Bill Krakauer has been bringing the Barbara Krakauer International Academy of Music to Vaison la Romaine, where the Academy's eminent musicians and teachers, in residence in a local cultural centre, work with a group of thirty students for a three-week course of instruction. Odile Bourin, concert cellist, Marilyn Engle, concert pianist and Marie-Christine Martinie-Myron, concert violinist, are all graduates of the Juilliard School of Music in New-York; Marissa Byers, clarinettist is a graduate of the Mannes School. Their 30 students, the youngest of whom was 13 years old came from Canada, the USA, Puerto-Rico, Holland, South Africa, and France. There is no advance selection process; candidates must simply be prepared to work hard in an atmosphere of respect, tolerance, and good humour. Between working sessions, the students go out to discover the surrounding sites and villages, and in the evening, recitals are scheduled in the Chapelle Saint Quenin. Last Sunday, these talented musicians, some of whom are destined to become famous musicians, charmed their audience with a performance that included some virtuoso playing and a great deal of sensitivity. A number of remarkable pianists and string players at this 9th session are surely bound for brilliant careers. The next concerts are . . . . Don't forget the dates, as the quality of the concerts is quite exceptional. A hat is passed round at the end of each concert to raise funds for the restoration of the chapel roof and vault, which should be completed in 2005, for the 10th anniversary of these classes. |
